A solar thermal solution will provide a typical UK household with 50 to 60% of their domestic hot water in a year. In the summertime this will be as high as 100% meaning that the boiler will never have to fire up, saving both energy and money. In the winter a lower level of energy is produced by the sun, so a boiler is also needed to provide energy to heat the domestic hot water.
It's a common misconception that solar thermal systems only work when the sun is shining. Solar thermal systems work with diffused radiation, so even on a cloudy day you will still get a good level of energy from the sun to heat your home.
It doesn't matter where you live in the UK, solar thermal will still provide you with domestic hot water, whether you live in John O'Groats or Lands End.
